About Costigan’s Funeral Home

Costigan’s Funeral Home

Costigan’s Funeral Home, located in the heart of Cahir, Co. Tipperary, represents a tradition of dignity, compassion, and community service that spans over six decades. Founded by James (Jimmy) Costigan in 1957, initially as a grocer and hackney service in Barrack Street, Cahir, the business quickly became a trusted name in the locality. With his wife Ellen, Jimmy laid the foundations for a family enterprise that would evolve into one of South Tipperary’s most respected funeral homes.

The Early Years

In 1957, Jimmy Costigan opened his grocer and hackney service, catering to the daily needs of Cahir residents. The business was built on personalised service, a principle that continues to define Costigan’s today. By 1977, responding to the needs of the local community, Jimmy expanded the business into undertaking, providing funeral services with the same care, respect, and professionalism that had earned him a loyal customer base in the grocery trade.

After Jimmy’s passing in 1983, the family tradition continued under the stewardship of his sons, Liam and Thomas Costigan, who committed themselves to maintaining the high standards and personal attention their father had established.

Establishment of the Funeral Home

In 1988, the Costigan family opened the funeral home on Lower Abbey Street, a building steeped in history, previously functioning as a forge. The horseshoe-shaped front entrance remains a distinctive architectural feature, paying homage to its historical roots. The transformation from forge to funeral home was executed with sensitivity, ensuring that the building could provide comfortable, dignified, and serene surroundings for families during times of bereavement.

The funeral home’s location in Lower Abbey Street places it at the heart of the community, accessible to families across South Tipperary, and ensures that Costigan’s continues to serve as a pillar of support during life’s most difficult moments.

Recent Expansion

In 2022, Costigan’s Funeral Home underwent significant extensions and modernisation, reaffirming its dedication to providing high-quality services in a contemporary setting. The refurbishment ensures that the funeral home can accommodate funerals of all sizes, from intimate gatherings to large services, with comfort, dignity, and privacy.

The modernised facility includes spacious chapels, private viewing areas, and state-of-the-art facilities, allowing families to conduct funeral services that are both meaningful and personalised.
